Agricultural innovation and adaptation to climate change: Insights from US maize

چکیده
Abstract Climate change is a major threat to the global food supply, and adaptation by technological progress essential. We show that scope of required innovation challenging. Our benchmark estimated yield gain in US maize due genetically engineered (GE) varieties. Extrapolated future yields, given climate projections, indicate significant negative impacts change. Yield shortfalls, end century, range from 2.8 6.3 times total gains first‐generation GE Ambitious targeted R&D efforts, breakthroughs, may be offset impact

متن کاملAdaptation to Climate Change: Evidence from US Agriculture
Understanding the potential impacts of climate change on economic outcomes requires knowing how agents might adapt to a changing climate. We exploit large variation in recent temperature and precipitation trends to identify adaptation to climate change in US agriculture, and use this information to generate new estimates of the potential impact of future climate change on agricultural outcomes....
متن کاملModelling Agricultural Production Risk and the Adaptation to Climate Change
A model that integrates biophysical simulations in an economic model is used to analyze the impact of climate change on crop production. The biophysical model simulates future plantmanagement-climate relationships and the economic model simulates farmers’ adaptation actions to climate change using a nonlinear programming approach. Beyond the development of average yields, special attention is d...
متن کاملHow limiting factors drive agricultural adaptation to climate change
Consensus is growing that agriculture is vulnerable to climate change and adaptation responses are necessary to minimize impacts. Nonetheless, the diversity of potential impacts, agro-ecological contexts and regional capacity for change make understanding adaptation behaviors challenging and ensure that climate change adaptation will not be the same across all contexts. Considering this heterog...
متن کاملchallenges of agricultural extension systems in adaptation to climate change: the perception of fars agricultural specialists
climate is changing and various scenarios indicate accelerated climate change in the future. if farmers and rural residents’ capacities do not enhance to adapt to the impacts of climate change, the impacts will overwhelm on agriculture and rural communities. extension systems can play an important role in agricultural adaptation to climate change. therefore, the aim of this research was to expl...
